Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
Licensed Clinical Social Workers are mental health providers that deal with issues such as life events, family conflicts, violence, substance abuse, and disabilities. They not only offer psychotherapy but also help patients find community care. They may practice in community mental health centers, family services agencies, child welfare agencies, hospitals, schools, businesses, nursing homes, private practice, courts, prisons, and various public and private agencies.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT, MFT)
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) are relationship specialists who treat persons involved in interpersonal relationships. They are trained to assess, diagnose and treat individuals, couples, families and groups to achieve more adequate, satisfying and productive marriage, family and social adjustment. The practice also includes premarital counseling, child counseling, divorce or separation counseling and other relationship counseling. Marriage and Family Therapists are psychotherapists and healing arts practitioners licensed by the State of California. Requirements for licensure include a related doctoral or two-year master’s degree, passage of a comprehensive written and oral examination and at least 3,000 hours of supervised experience.

Psychiatrist (MD)
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have specialized training to diagnosis and treat mental illnesses. They understand the body’s functions and the complex relationship between emotional illness and other medical illnesses. They are the only mental health professionals who can prescribe medication. Although they may sometimes practice some type of psychotherapy, particularly if they are in private practice, at the present time, most psychiatrists focus largely on prescribing medication for the treatment of mental disorders.
